The forerunner of the current store opened in 1868 as R Campbell & Son in premises that are now part of Campbell's of Leyburn. The principals were Robert Campbell, who was head gardener on the Bolton Estate, and his son Alexander, an apprentice grocer.

Almost a century later, the store they created was the site for a local retail revolution. The 4th generation Campbell to run the store – who was also called Robert - took the visionary step of ripping out the interior and creating the first self-service shop in the Dales.

In recent years, Mick & Jen have trained the next generation of White Rose Candlemakers, who now handle the day-to-day operations here in Wensley.

Today, White Rose Candles is co-owned and managed by Jane and Sandra, who welcome you to our beautiful traditional workshop in a historic 19th-century water mill. The brainchild of Mr C. R. Armstrong CMG O.B.E, the Forbidden Corner was originally built as a private folly but due to public demand was subsequently opened to the public.

The Forbidden Corner originally started as small wood of Fir trees initially planted as a wind break to the stables at Tupgill Park, with hundreds of trees being planted in 1979. Ten years later in 1989, Colin Armstrong and his good friend Malcolm Tempest decided that a small bower in the western corner needed to be created to enjoy the view down the Coverdale valley. The first job was to build a high wall to shelter the area from the high winds and to create a walled garden.

The Bake-Well is a family run delicatessen and fresh food takeaway. Delicious homemade baking and savoury dishes made daily in a small, but beautiful shop in the heart of Wensleydale.
Quiches, soups, sausage rolls, pies, to name a few are baked fresh every morning. Our lovely wooden counter is always full of homemade goodies! A range of traybakes, muffins, scones, cakes all made on the premises.
Partners, Bridie and Craig (soon to be married), opened The Bake-Well's doors on the 5th January 2020. Craig is from Teesside and as a trained chef, originally came to Askrigg to work at The King's Arms - just two doors up in Askrigg. Bridie has grown up in Askrigg and has always enjoyed working in hospitality, having worked in various establishments throughout the Dales. They had both always wanted to open their own business, so when the opportunity arose in September 2019, the couple thought why not give it a go!

The Wensleydale Garden Centre is the pride and joy (and daily challenge) of married couple Trevor and Ruth Hawkes. Our story begins in 1984 when milk quotas were introduced, forcing Brian Moore (hence the name), to diversify the spare milk from his small Guernsey herd into making ice cream.
